We keep taps flowing to 2.5 million homes and over 100,000 business, that’s why our teams work round-the-clock to treat and clean 13,000 litres of water every second of every day. 

 

Once we collect rainwater from natural sources across our region, every drop travels to one of over 140 water treatment works where it goes through several stages of treatment to make it safe to drink, cook and wash with. 

 

Screening

First we remove large debris from the water by passing it through large screens. Here we take out things like leaves and twigs that naturally collect in water sources.

Cleaning

Now we tackle the smaller particles, removing dirt and smaller solids. Before adding safe chemicals and pressured air into the water to help remove any unwanted particles. 

Filtering

To make it even cleaner, the water passes through large filters (as big as two-story houses). Our filters are made from natural rock that remove tiny particles that are hard to see. Our carbon filters then act as a purifier, taking out nasty impurities.

And because we're always exploring new and better ways to clean water to the highest quality – at some of our sites we use advanced technology called Ultrafiltration. This is where the water goes through a super thin filter (with tiny microscopic holes) to remove the smallest particles and any nasty bacteria that may be hiding.

Final treatment

Finally we add a very small amount of chlorine to remove any bacteria that may still be hanging around, before the water makes it way to your home
